Shirley Ann Griffin was born March 20,1935, in  New Hampton, the daughter of Frank and Mae (Mitchell) Griffin.  She was raised in Lawler and attended Mt. Carmel Catholic School and graduated from Lawler High School in 1953.

She attended St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City and Mason City graduating in 1956, and after passing her boards, became a registered nurse.

Shirley was united in marriage to Joseph Murray on October 27, 1956, at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler where the couple made their home.  To this union three children were born.

She was employed as an R.N. in Obstetrics at St. Joseph’s Hospital in New Hampton until 1966 before she took a job as the school nurse at Turkey Valley Community Schools.  She retired in 1997.

Shirley was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Mt. Carmel Rosary Society, an Alumni of St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Mason City, and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary of New Hampton.

Shirley and Joe were always very proud of their Irish heritage. They loved to celebrate every St. Patrick’s Day, and traveled to Ireland to visit their country of heritage. Shirley participated and volunteered in the Lawler Irish Festival for many years. Their son, Tim, built several creative Irish floats for the Irish Festival parades, and won several first prize awards—with Shirley at the helm. Shirley was also a special honoree at the 2018 Irish Festival Parade.

After her husband Jody’s death in 2004, Shirley moved to New Hampton and lived the majority of her life there. She participated in many volunteer opportunities at the New Hampton hospital, voter polls, and the Chickasaw Event Center, where she also served as a board member. She loved being with people and wanted great purpose in her life.

Shirley was inducted into the Turkey Valley Hall of Fame in 2024 in honor of her 40 years as a school nurse. She was incredibly humbled and honored by this induction.

And finally, and most importantly, one of Shirley’s greatest attributes was the role of caregiver. She took care of her husband, mother, sister, brother, and sister-in-law when they became ill towards the end of their lives. No task was too difficult for her, whether it be moving them to a different home/care facility, managing their health and finances, to most importantly, caring. nursing, and loving them. Her children are in awe of her strength and love.

She is survived by three children, David Murray of Chesapeake, VA; Tim (Margie) Murray of Mankato, MN; and Julie (John) Rondeau of Austin, TX; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe; two brothers, Gene Griffin and Joe Stupka; and two sisters, Mary Murray and Marion Manders.

  15. Tim, Margie and family,
I was saddened to see the passing of your mom. What a special woman she was! I remember her always having such a kind smile. She had a heck of a job being our beloved school nurse to 1000+ students back at TVHS. She truly had the wings of an angel. Blessed be her memory.

  16. “Simply the Best” was what I lip-synched pretending to be Tina Turner at Shirley’s TV retirement party. And she certainly was in many ways. It was always fun to run into her at community celebrations when she was out and about. Now I have requested that Tina sing this to her in person. “Better than all the rest.”

  17. As we reflect on remembering Shirley’s Irish life of kindness and caring that she shared with so many we are saddened but extend our sympathy and prayers to Shirley’s daughter and sons and their families

  22. My deepest sympathy to Shirley’s family. Shirley and I have been friends since the 70s when we worked at Turkey Valley. Too many wonderful memories to count or list. We always had a great time. She always appreciated my sending her a St.Patrick’s Day and birthday card in March. I will truly miss our lunch outings.

  23. Oh the memories from you being my School Nurse to me being YOUR nurse in later years as well as your Volunteer years. I promise to keep our “secrets” safe *wink*. Thanks for the fun and laughs. God Bless you. My sympathy to the family.

  24. Our sympathy to the whole Murray Family, Shirley was the kindly school nurse who wrapped and held my arm all the way to the hospital in NH after going through the TV gym glass door and the wire sliced my arm. It would be part of our reminiscing when I would see her at church. My mother-in-law, Joanne Peters Gaborcik, went to nursing school with your Mom and shared memories of her with us too. May she rest in peace. John and Cathy

  25. Sympathy and prayers to Shirley’s family. We were both on the Chickasaw Event Center board of directors for a few years. Eventually we each resigned and moved on different activities in our lives. I seldom saw her after leaving CEC, but she had a pleasant attitude and was willing to help with fund-raising efforts.

  26. We are all so lucky to have known Shirley, she was the kindest nurse at Turkey Valley, most caring person to know. She will be deeply missed. From seeing her smiles in the hallways at Turkey Valley to seeing her smiles at the Lawler Irish Fest. She loved being around people and getting to know each and everyone. Rest in peace Dear Mrs. Murray your work is complete. Our deepest sympathies to the Murray families.
