Wilma Kay Koenigsfeld age 78 of Ionia, IA, died Friday, January 5, 2018, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN, surrounded by her loving family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Ionia with Rev. Brian Dellaert and Rev. Mark Osterhaus concelebrating the Mass.
Interment will be held in St. Boniface Cemetery, Ionia with Steven Phyfe, Patrick Lumley, Brian Lumley, Jeff Faust, Kevin Crooks, and John Selvig serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Kay’s grandchildren, Nathan Brown, Megan Lester, Shana Boji, Lance Brown, Sydney Boji, and Brylie Boji.
Friends may greet the family 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 6:30 p.m. parish scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior the Mass at the church in Ionia on Wednesday.
Wilma Kay Koenigsfeld was born May 6, 1939, in Hampton, IA, the daughter of Harry and Marie (Reinke) Lumley. She attended school in Nashua and graduated from Nashua High School in 1957. Kay attended Wartburg College in Waverly. Kay was introduced to Clark Koenigsfeld through mutual friends and the couple were married on October 3, 1959, at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Nashua, IA. To this union four children were born, Scott, Diane, Kurt, and Michele.
Kay initially worked at Hydrotile in Nashua for a couple of years while the couple lived and worked on the farm near Ionia. Kay took care her family, and began driving bus for the New Hampton School District. Kay spent 50 years driving a local route and driving various sporting teams throughout Northeast Iowa to competitions. She was also an integral part of the farming operation working with Clark in any way necessary to help the family and farm.
She was very active at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia serving on the parish guild board, the parish council, and helping the Matthew circle. Kay spent time on the St. John school board, and taught religion for many years.
Kay loved to garden, cook, and play cards. Taking annual fishing trips with the family to leech lake every summer. Spending time with friends and family was everything to Kay. She especially loved the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Kay is survived by her husband of 58 years Clark; two sons, Scott Koenigsfeld of Three Rivers, MI, Curtis Koenigsfeld of Ionia, IA; two daughters, Diane (Tom) Brown of Ionia, IA, Michele (Bryce) Boji of Ionia, IA; six grandchildren, Nathan (Katie) Brown and their three children Addison, Easton, and Holden of Ionia, IA; Megan (Blaine) Lester and their two children Maya, and Dominic of Center Point, IA, Shana Boji of Cedar Falls, IA, Lance Brown of Cedar Falls, IA, Sydney Boji of Cedar Falls, IA, and Brylie Boji of Ionia, IA; two brothers, Leland (Pam) Lumley of Charles City, IA, Richard (Barb) Lumley of Nashua, IA; one sister, Marylou (John) Phyfe of Nashua, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two half- brothers, Raymond and Lloyd Lumley; half - sister, Mildred Varrelman.

My deepest sympathy to the Koenigsfeld family on your loss of Kay. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Kay was a loyal employee of the New Hampton Community School District as a bus driver for many years. She will be missed in many ways transporting students to and from school and to extra curricular activities at other schools around the area. I will always remember when Kay was our bus driver when I was basketball manager in high school.
Great memories of Kay as our special bus driver for State Dance/Flags. She was our biggest fan and looked forward to State each year. Kay and I had many stories to share about our trips home from Des Moines. Poor Kay drove the bus home in ice and snow storms and terrible fog. One time, it took us all night to get home as we stopped at the Boondocks for a break because it was so foggy. Kay got home just in time to go home to change clothes, drink some coffee and then return to the high school to pick up students for the Church Tour. Kay will be missed by so many! Kay’s family and friends: I always was pleased when Kay drove the bus to the various field trips my classes or business club took. She was so pleasant and professional and could get that bus through the tightest corners. She never complained when we had long days to Des Moines, Iowa City, Rochester, or Minneapolis. Kay was fun to visit with at the various games. Take care and prayers to you.

Kay was just like a second mom to me since when we were young we lived right across the road from them. Our families have so many great memories of the trips we have went on together the gray hairs we may have caused them when they wouldn’t be able to find us right away cause we may have snuck off to each other’s houses. Loved to go to Kay’s since she always had delicious homemade goodies made on Saturday mornings. She has always been a great mom, wife and best friend to my mom (Carolyn Hansen). She will truely be missed. Please know all of you we are here if you need anything. Lone You!!!!

We always enjoyed a trip to the Koenigsfeld farm to spend a little time with Kay & Clark on our visits to Ionia. Kay always had a humorous story to share . I’m pretty sure she just tolerated her son-in-law Bryce. Kay was such a great friend to my mother Rose Boji for many years.

I am a niece of Wilma Kay’s. When I was about 5 years old she came to our farm and took me home with her. I had absolutely know idea what was going on. I was told I was going home with her and my mom and dad would be after me in a couple days. Once I got home with her, it was like being in a crazy house. Trying a beautiful dress on me, bossy people telling me what to do. There was going to be a wedding and I was going to wear that beautiful dress. The big day arrived. We we’re going to the church. Before we left I was given strick instructions on how to keep the dress up off the ground. Don’t let it get dirty!!! Got to the church and I got fussed at again. I held the dress up like directed but held it so tight it now had wrinkles!!! Well the ceremony lasted what seemed like forever… But finally it was all over.
Now another big exciting thing has happened in Wilma Kay’s life. She gets to do the greatest thing any of us could do. She gets to sit with our Father in Heaven. She is going to be an angel watching over all of us until it’s our time to join her. Rest in peace.
