Jeanne was born May 13, 1932, at Rockford, lowa, the daughter of Helmer and Muriel (Parcher) Helmers. Her father died when she was four years old, and her mother later married Lester Blum, who also had a four year old daughter, Viola. Jeanne grew up on a farm west of Marble Rock.

She graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1949, attended Hamilton’s Business School, and worked as secretary at Standard Oil in Mason City for two years.

She was married to Donald E. Blum on November 2, 1952, at the Marble Rock Methodist Church. Don was stationed with the USMC at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, CA, where they resided until his discharge in 1954.

They returned to lowa with their six week old son, David, and farmed at Rockford, IA, for a number of years. In 1964 they moved to Nashua, Iowa, where Don was employed at Hydrotile. By this time, they had four sons, David, Steven, Robert and James. When the youngest was in school, Jeanne started working as a secretary at White Farm Equipment Co. in Charles City, and later as an Interviewer at Job Service of lowa, retiring in 1996.

When their family was young, Jeanne was active with the Methodist Sunday School program, Cub Scouts, paper routes, and the many school and sport activities of their four sons, along with her fulltime job. She loved camping, hunting and fishing trips with her family and good friends. Jeanne and her husband were very supportive of conservation and environmental preservation issues. She also enjoyed cooking for her family, and loved the holidays when they all gathered together.
